Update (Dec. 11 - 23 Weeks 1 Day)

Mark and I had our last 2nd Trimester appointment today (Thursday, Dec. 11). When I walked into the office, they handed me a large cup of a strange orange drink. Ah yes - the infamous glucose test. I had to drink the entire thing in a few minutes and, although it certainly didn't taste good (think orange soda but 40x sweeter), it was bearable. I also had a lot of blood work done. I had a blood test to check the glucose levels in addition to my lovenox levels. They check the lovenox levels at the end of the 2nd trimester to make sure that the current dose is still OK (with the weight gain etc). The glucose test checks for gestational diabetes which tends to occur during this time in a temporary form. Approximately 2-5% of expecting women develop this type of diabetes and the screening of this is done towards the end of the 2nd trimester. This occurs because the placenta is producing a large amount of hormones that may lead to insulin resistance.

We also talked about our "birth plan" with our Doctor. Since our little man is now viable outside the womb, we talked about what to do if I go into labor early...where to go, what to expect etc. Our little man will be in much better shape once we hit the 3rd trimester(the first week in January!!) so our fingers are crossed that he continues to grow big and strong.

The test results should be back by Monday, 12/15. I'll keep everyone posted!
